New Jersey Appleseed Public Interest Law Center is a nonpartisan, nonprofit public interest law organization based in Newark that seeks systemic change through law-based advocacy, litigation, and policy reform. Founded in the late 1990s as part of the national Appleseed network, it provides a legal voice to underserved communities and works on issues including voting rights, health care access, government and corporate accountability, environmental justice, and consumer protection.
Election and voting rights reform, health care access and affordability, consumer financial protections, corporate and government accountability, environmental and land use oversight, immigrant access to public benefits, and democratic governance of common-interest communities.
Private foundation grants and individual donations, with additional support from charitable contributions and pro bono partnerships; it does not rely on client fees.
Member of the national Appleseed Network; collaborates with NJ Citizen Action, NJ for Health Care Coalition, Greater Newark Healthcare Coalition, League of Women Voters of New Jersey, New Jersey Conservation Foundation, and Fair Share Housing Center; founded with involvement from Ralph Nader and civil rights attorney Arthur Kinoy.
