The Freedom Index is a legislative scorecard published by The New American magazine, the official publication of the John Birch Society. It evaluates members of Congress based on their adherence to a constitutionalist interpretation of limited government principles, focusing on how closely lawmakers’ votes align with the U.S. Constitution as interpreted by the organization.
Limited federal government, strict constitutional originalism, reduced federal spending, opposition to international organizations and treaties viewed as infringing on U.S. sovereignty, strong national defense, and protection of individual liberties as defined by a conservative constitutional framework.
Primarily funded through membership dues, donations from individual supporters, and publication subscriptions associated with the John Birch Society.
