The United Steelworkers (USW) is an international labor union representing workers across metals, mining, manufacturing, energy, chemical, rubber, paper, forestry, healthcare and related sectors in the United States and Canada; it organizes workers, negotiates collective bargaining agreements, defends workplace health and safety, pensions and benefits, and advocates for policies to protect industrial jobs and worker rights.
Collective bargaining and contract enforcement, workplace health and safety, pensions and benefits protection, job training and apprenticeship programs, industrial and trade policies to protect domestic manufacturing jobs, just-transition and environmental policy with worker protections, and political advocacy for pro-worker legislation and candidates.
Primarily funded by member dues and assessments, supported by union investments and funds for strike/organizing activities, and supplemented by contributions to affiliated political committees.
Affiliated with major labor bodies such as the AFL-CIO and with Canadian labour organizations, composed of numerous USW districts and local unions, and partners with community, civil‑society and industry stakeholder groups; also operates affiliated political and advocacy entities.
